Professor Michael Scharf, President of the Hague-based International Criminal Law, was the guest speaker at our Temple's Annual Speaker Series this October.

Over 100 people listened to his his explanation of events leading up to this crisis. He also expounded upon options for handling this or similar situations. Professor Scharf's talk was informative and interesting and was followed by several minutes of Q & A.

Mr. Scharf is also a professor and an Associate Dean for Global Legal Studies at CWRU School of Law. In 2005, Scharf and the Public International Law and Policy Group, a Non-Governmental Organization he co-founded and directs, were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by six governments and the Prosecutor of an International Criminal Tribunal for the work they have done to help in the prosecution of major war criminals, such as Slobodan Milosevic, Charles Taylor, and Saddam Hussein. During the elder Bush and Clinton Administrations, Scharf served in the Office of the Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State.

Michael Scharf is also a published author of over seventy scholarly articles and fifteen books, including “The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda” which was awarded the American Society of International Law’s Certificate of Merit as an outstanding book in 1999, and “Enemy of the State: The Trial and Execution of Saddam Hussein,” which won the International Association of Penal Law’s book of the year award for 2009 . His latest book is “Customary International Law in Times of Fundamental Change: Recognizing Grotian Moments” (Cambridge University Press, 2013). Scharf produces and hosts the radio program “Talking Foreign Policy,” broadcast on WCPN 90.3 FM.
