On October 30th 2016, Shulem Deen discussed experiences which led him to write that book and what he has learned since its publication.
Shulem Deen was raised to believe
that questions are dangerous. At 18,
he knew how to slaughter an ox in
Jerusalem’s ancient temple, but he
knew less than most seven-year olds
about technology, literature and
sex - a world almost in his backyard.
He was a member of the Skverers,
one of the most insular Hasidic sects in this country, located a few
short miles from New York City. But he transgressed! He turned on
a radio! His curiosity led him to the library and then to the internet.
It took a few years as he learned more and more about this outside
world, forcing him into a life of deception, until discovered, ostracized
and forced to end communication with his wife and children.
